Snake Awareness

Our parklands are home to a diverse range of snakes, which play an important role in the Aussie bush. But what should you do if you spot one?
If you come across a snake while exploring the parklands, stay calm and avoid sudden movements. Even small snakes can be venomous, so it's best to let them be. Most snakes will move away if left undisturbed, and will only bite if threatened. Keep your distance and never try to handle or move the snake.
Report any sightings to the Rangers at 0459 883 834. For those who often visit bushland areas, carrying a Snake Bite Kit is a wise precaution.
In the rare event of a snake bite, follow these steps:
1. Call 000 immediately
2. Remain as still as possible to help slow the spread of venom
3. Apply a firm bandage over the bite area and mark its location
4. Bandage the entire limb (from fingers to shoulder or toes to hip) and mark the bite site again
5. Use a rigid splint to immobilise the limb —anything available like a piece of wood, a branch, or rolled-up paper will work
6. Sit tight and wait for the ambulance.
Staying informed is your best defence against snake bites. Stay safe and vigilant!
