Stallholder Spotlight: Aunty's Ginger Tonic
Aunty’s Ginger Tonic is a great drink, but it’s a better story. Its founder, Yarrie Bangura, fled her war-torn home in Sierra Leone when she was just eight. Years later, she would arrive in Australia as a refugee. Inspired by her African heritage, she started making the special ginger brew that had been handed down by her Aunty and Grandmother. She calls it a natural remedy, and she could be on to something – her great‑grandmother famously lived to 116.
Drink it to ward off colds. Drink it to aid digestion. Or just because it tastes good.
To Yarrie, Aunty’s Ginger Tonic isn’t a business. It’s a symbol of her past, her future and the power of community, and her way of ‘giving back’ to the country that took her in.
